Progressing when you can't add plates

When you can't add weight, add a rep. Hit your target on every set and next session's target goes up by one. Miss it and the target stands. Same double progression as a barbell lift with one variable removed, which makes it simpler rather than worse.

Rep-only progression

Pull-ups, dips, push-ups, most core work. There is no 5 lb step available, so reps carry the whole load of progression.

My towel pull-ups sat at four sets of eight through three sessions in June. The first attempt at ten came up short on the last set, nine instead of ten. Since then it has been four clean sets of ten every time. That's the whole mechanism: hold a number until every set owns it, then move the number, and repeat the number when a set falls short.

The same brakes apply as on a loaded lift. A grind holds the rep target where it is instead of adding to it, and a set note that reads as pain drops the target rather than raising it. Rep progression is still progression, and progression still needs a gate.

When the equipment caps out before you do

Here is the more interesting problem, and the one nobody writes about.

Look at three of my personal records: dumbbell shrug at 66.1387 lb, military press at 66.1387 lb, Romanian deadlift at 66.1387 lb. That oddly precise number is 30 kilograms. It is the maximum setting on my adjustable dumbbells, and three separate lifts have been parked against it for weeks.

None of those are plateaus. They are a ceiling. The lifts stopped progressing because the equipment ran out, not because I did, and the distinction matters because the two problems have opposite solutions. A plateau wants a reset and a run back up. A ceiling wants a different exercise.

The tell is the rep column. A stall slides backwards at a fixed weight. A ceiling sits at the top weight hitting every rep, every session, looking suspiciously comfortable.

What to do about a ceiling

Change the angle. Single-leg and single-arm versions halve the load requirement instantly. A 30 kg dumbbell is trivial for a two-leg Romanian deadlift and genuinely hard for a single-leg one.

Slow it down. A four-second lowering phase on the same weight is more work than a fast one, and costs nothing but patience.

Add reps until they are absurd, then move on. There is real value in sets of fifteen and twenty, but if a hinge is at 30 kg for twenty clean reps, the honest answer is that you need a barbell for that pattern.

Buy the smallest thing that fixes it. For hinges and rows, that is usually a barbell and a few plates rather than a bigger dumbbell.

Earning the right to add weight

The other direction is the happy one. When a bodyweight lift stops being hard, load it: a belt, a vest, a dumbbell between the feet.

The moment you do, the rules change. Reps treats a loaded pull-up as a loaded compound lift with no calibrated history, and hands you the program's weight rather than guessing from your bodyweight reps. That's deliberate. Ten clean bodyweight pull-ups tells you nothing reliable about what you can do with 25 lb hanging off you, and pretending otherwise would produce a confident wrong number on your first loaded session.
